Mob Kills Police Officer In Village Of Slain Kenyan Legislator
ELDORET, Kenya (AP) — A Kenyan police officer is dead after being attacked by a mob in the village of an opposition lawmaker who was killed by another officer Thursday.
The mob consisted of about 3,000 people armed with spears, clubs, machetes and bows and arrows. The officer’s death is the first police casualty that authorities have linked to a month of post-election violence.
More than 800 people have been killed since December’s disputed presidential election.
Britain’s foreign minister says Kenya should send its army into the streets, saying Kenyan police seem not to be seen as a neutral force, but are believed to be behind some of the killings.
But Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki insists the security situation is “under control,” and suggests that the opposition take its grievances over the election to the courts.
Kibaki has said his position as president is non-negotiable, while opposition activists say he stole the election.
