Mets to designate Matt Harvey for assignment
The New York Mets will designate Matt Harvey for assignment after the one-time phenom declined an assignment to the minor leagues, general manager Sandy Alderson said Friday.
The right-hander has struggled recently and was moved to the bullpen in an attempt to get him back on track.
However, the 29-year-old has posted a 7.00 ERA over 27 innings pitched this season, including four starts. He gave up five runs on three hits, including a home run, while also walking three in the seventh inning of the Mets’ 11-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

Harvey, who has pitched for the Mets since breaking into the majors in 2012, will now go through the waivers before being traded or released.
Harvey’s once-promising career has been derailed by multiple injuries, including Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss the entire 2014 season and a season-ending procedure to treat thoracic outlet syndrome in June 2016. He also missed more than two months of the 2017 season with a stress fracture in his scapula.
His career record currently sits at 34-37 with an ERA of 3.66 over 639.1 innings pitched.
