Memorial Day 2021: Inland Northwest events, ceremonies to honor the fallen

Memorial Day at Fairmount Memorial Park

SPOKANE, Wash. — Many people think of Memorial Day as the unofficial start to summer, but the holiday means so much more than that. 

The annual holiday is a day set aside to honor and remember the brave men and women who have died fighting for our country.

Those wishing to partake in Memorial Day events and ceremonies will have the chance to do so this year. Below, you will find a list of happenings: 

Salute to Service Benefit Concert and Car Show – Sunday

This family friendly event will feature the Heather King Band and Gents Auto Club displaying their hotrods. There will be a beer garden, free hot dogs and chips until supplies run out. 

There is a $5 suggested donation, with all proceeds going to Second Harvest Food Bank. 

The event will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Greenwood Memorial Terrace, 211 Government Way, Spokane. 

Memorial Day Heroes’ Breakfast – Monday

Hosted by Heritage Funeral and Cremation, this pancake feed is free to all veterans. Members of the public are welcome to attend for $3 and all donations will go toward supporting Second Harvest Food Bank. 

The event runs from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m, 509 N Government Way. 

Greater Spokane Elks #228 Memorial Day Service – Monday 

This memorial service runs from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Spokane Memorial Gardens, 5090 Cheney Spokane Rd. 

Flag Retirement Memorial Day Service – Monday

This flag retirement memorial service runs from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Pines Cemetery, 1402 S Pines Rd, Spokane Valley. 

Liberty Lake Memorial Day Tribute  

People are welcome to visit Pavillion Park, where luminaries recognizing fallen service members will be on display. The luminaries will be on display throughout the weekend and those looking to sponsor one can do so here. 

City of Hayden Memorial Day Service – Monday

This service begins with a wreath laying at Honeysuckle Beach at 9:30 a.m. At 11 a.m, Gold Star Parents John and Stacey Holley will speak at McIntire Family Park.
