CHENEY, Wash.— Medical Lake has put a temporary ban on fireworks due to wildfire concerns.

Dry conditions and the prediction of upcoming record-setting temperatures in the state led to Spokane County Fire District 3 to place the temporary ban. Section 5.10.060 of the Medical Lake Municipal Code allows for the Fire Chief to prohibit the use of fireworks during a “period of hot, dry weather accompanied by low fuel moistures.”

Firefighters have already been on their toes these past few weeks with these dry conditions. Fuel conditions are 6-8 weeks ahead of schedule, indicating that these conditions are more noticeable in late August.

The conditions are predicted to stay put throughout the Fourth of July holiday. The fire district is asking for the public’s help in efforts to limit potential risks of fire creation. Additional staff from Fire District 3 and other fire departments in the county plan to have additional staff on hand this weekend.
