Meals on Wheels volunteers bring holiday cheer

SPOKANE, Wash. — Meals on Wheels volunteers spend the year delivering food to those in need. This time of year, they go the extra mile to deliver Christmas cheer.

Seniors in need can be adopted by families to buy Christmas gifts for the holidays. Families buy the gifts and drop them off at Meals on Wheels, then volunteers help deliver those gifts.

The non profit delivers meals to 500 seniors each day in Spokane.

Howard Kovarsky is retired after working for many years with blind children and their families. For the past year, he’s been volunteering for Meals on Wheels.

Monday, Howard delivered warm meals and Christmas gifts door to door.

One of his stops is at the home of James Bezotte and Phillip Boot. Boot has helped his 71-year-old friend since he went blind twenty years ago.

“I shake and I don’t know why and they wont tell me, so I believe it is some kind of brain damage I got. So, I can’t cook, he can’t cook cause he can’t see to cook,” said Boot.

They were both in for a surprise with their Christmas gifts.

“They do a good job,” Bezotte said.

“It’s just fun. You get a smile. A lot of these people, you are the only ones they see during the day,” said Kovarsky.

Howard also delivers pillows. Five hundred pillow cases were made by volunteers. James and Phillip say this delivery made their day.

“Hey, they are a God sent, they are,” said Boot.

The Pillowcases program started in March and was a big help from the community.

The community also participated in Stuff the Trunk at the Downtown Subaru and 135 pillows were donated.
