McConnell underwent surgery for shoulder fracture

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell underwent surgery Thursday in Kentucky related to a shoulder fracture he suffered earlier this month.

“Senator McConnell had successful surgery yesterday in Louisville, Kentucky to repair a fracture in his shoulder. The surgery was performed without incident, and the Leader is grateful to the surgical team for their skill,” McConnell’s spokesman David Popp said in a statement Friday.

McConnell sustained the injury after tripping on his outdoor patio at his Louisville home.

He has been working from home during the Senate’s August recess as he recovered from his injury, according to Popp.

McConnell’s shoulder injury came as Democrats were demanding he reconvene the Senate to pass gun control legislation in the wake of two mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

McConnell told a Kentucky radio station last week that he won’t bring the Senate back early from its August recess but the issues of background check legislation and “red flag” laws will be “front and center” when the body reconvenes.
