Marxen leads Vandals over Wildcats

MOSCOW, Idaho. –The University of Idaho Vandals Women’s Basketball team downed the Weber State University Wildcats 70-50 in Big Sky Conference play.
Idaho led for majority of the game and by as many as 20 points. The Vandals put on a strong defensive showing in the fourth quarter and allowed only two points to Weber State in the final ten minutes. A 13-0 run to end the game saw Idaho win 70-50. Three Vandals scored in double-figures while Gina Marxen led the way with a game-high 23 points.
Weber State opened the scoring over Idaho early in the first period and led 5-2 after the first two minutes of play. A three-pointer from Gina Marxen at the 6:43 mark in the first gave Idaho their first lead of the game, 7-5. The Vandals and Wildcats battled back and forth offensively the rest of the way in the first period until Marxen hit her third three-pointer of the game at the 1:49 mark to give Idaho a 17-16.
Slight offensive struggles continued for the Vandals early in the second period before a 9-0 run, capped by a pair of Marxen free-throws, gave Idaho a 31-22 lead over Weber State with 4:10 remaining in the period.
A Hailey Christopher bucket in the paint with 21 seconds left int eh period would give Idaho a seven-point lead, 40-33 at halftime.
Neither side was able to find much offense in the third period. Weber State outscored the Vandals 15-12 in the third, however Idaho held a 52-48 lead entering the fourth period.
Idaho put on a strong defensive showing in the fourth period and only allowed two points to Weber State in the final ten minutes.
The Vandals opened the period on a 5-0 run, capped with a Lizzy Klinker three-pointer, to lead 57-48 at the 6:39 mark, before Kayla Watkins ended the run with a jumper.
Following Watkins’ jumper, Idaho outscored Weber State 13-0 in the remaining 6:08 of the game. The run to end the game included six Weber State turnovers.
Idaho defeated Weber State 70-50.
