Mariners sign Taijuan Walker to one year contract

Mariners crushed by White Sox

PEORIA, Ariz. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today from Mariners Spring Training Camp that the Mariners signed right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker to a 2020 Major League contract.

To make room on the Major League 40-man roster, Seattle has placed right-handed pitcher Austin Adams on the 60-day Injured List.

“We’re excited to bring Taijuan back to Seattle,” Dipoto said. “We believe our opportunity and his skill set are a great match and know that, if healthy, he can be an impact Major League starter for us.”

Walker, 27, was originally drafted by the Mariners in the 1st round (43rd overall) of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Yucaipa High School (CA). He appeared in four Major League seasons with Seattle (2013-2016), going 22-22 with a 4.18 ERA (166 ER, 357.0 IP) with 99 walks and 322 strikeouts. He was traded to Arizona on Nov. 23, 2016 along with Ketel Marte (inf) in exchange for Jean Segura (inf), Mitch Haniger (of) and Zac Curtis (lhp). With Arizona, he appeared in parts of three Major League seasons (2017-2019), posting a 9-9 record with a 3.47 ERA (66 ER, 171.1 IP) with 66 walks and 156 strikeouts.

Walker posted a career-best 3.49 ERA (61 ER, 157.1 IP) in 2017 with the Diamondbacks, but has appeared in only 4 games since the start of the 2018 season. After making just 3 starts in his 2018 campaign, he suffered a torn right ulnar collateral ligament on April 14, 2018 vs. Los Angeles-NL, and underwent Tommy John surgery on April 25, 2018 in New York, performed by Dr. David Altchek. He made 1 appearance in 2019, tossing 1.0 scoreless inning with 1 strikeout in an abbreviated start on September 29 vs. San Diego.

Adams, 28, is recovering from Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery on his left knee. He underwent surgery on Oct. 15, 2019 in Dallas (performed by Dr. Daniel Cooper) after suffering the injury on Sept. 15, 2019 in Baltimore.

Prior to his injury, Adams was 2-2 with a 3.77 ERA (13 ER, 31.0 IP) with 51 strikeouts and just 14 walks in 29 appearances (including 2 starts as an opener) with Seattle last season. He had a 3.07 ERA (10 ER, 29.1 IP) in his 27 relief appearances with the Mariners, and tallied at least 1 strikeout in 23 of those 27 games. He posted a 15.03 strikeouts-per-9.0 IP in relief last season, the 3rd-best mark among all American League relievers (min: 100 BF).

Adams began 2019 with the Washington Nationals, making 1 appearance prior to being designated for assignment on April 30. Seattle acquired him from the Nationals on May 4. He was optioned to AAA Tacoma, where he made 2 appearances, before being recalled by Seattle on May 13.

Adams is 2-2, with a 3.79 ERA (16 ER, 38.0 IP) in parts of three big league seasons with Washington (2017-2019) and Seattle (2019).
