Mariners Release Sexson
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Mariners have released first baseman Richie Sexson.
Sexson, in the final year of a four-year baseball contract that was paying him $15,500,000 this season, did not play in Wednesday night’s 6-4 Seattle victory over the Oakland Athletics at McAfee Stadium. S
Sexson was hitting just .218 with 11 home runs.
To take Sexson’s spot on the roster, the Mariners purchased the contract of infielder Tug Hulett from the AAA Tacoma Rainers. Hulett was hitting .302 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs. The Mariners also called up pitcher Jared Wells from Tacoma. Wells has a 1-3 record and a 5.20 ERA.
Seattle also put pitcher Erik Bedard on the disabled list.
