Man shot, killed in North Spokane

Two people have been arrested for a North Spokane shooting that left one person dead late Wednesday night.

Police say that a man called from an apartment near Dean and Cedar streets at about 11:30 Wednesday night to tell them that he had been shot. When they arrived, the man had died.

While investigating the homicide Thursday, Major Crimes detectives zeroed in on two suspects who live in an apartment near where the victim lived.

Detectives made contact with the first suspect, David McLaughlin, and then executed a search warrant at his apartment, which he shares with his girlfriend, Melinda Barrera. Both McLaughlin and Barrera were interviewed by detectives, who determined the two broke into the victim’s home, and Barrera shot him in the chest after McLaughlin had assaulted him.

The couple was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a charge of 2nd Degree Murder.

The victim’s identity is being withheld, pending notification of the family.
