SPOKANE, Wash. — The teen who died in a car fire on Thursday was a former basketball player at Ferris High School, Spokane Public Schools confirmed.

All Ferris boys and girls basketball games will be canceled on Friday while the district mourns the loss of the former student, who graduated just last year.

Spokane Fire District 8 responded to the crash near S. Freya Road and S. Baltimore Road early Thursday afternoon.

They said the driver was speeding and hit a tree, which sparked the fire.
