Man Killed In ATV Crash Near Elk

ELK, Wash. –A man was killed Saturday night when he was involved in an ATV crash in north Spokane County.

Karl Young, 50, died after the ATV he was riding crashed into another ATV near Button Road and Conklin Road, southeast of Elk. The rider of the other ATV, 37-year-old Mark Robertson, was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Sheriff’s traffic investigators said Young was in the lead position and being followed by Mark E. Robertson, 37, who was either directly behind Young or behind and in an offset position.

Investigators say it appeared the second machine made contact with the first and both ATV’s rolled over. Young was either not wearing a helmet or was wearing it improperly.

The helmet was found more than 70 feet away from Young who suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene.

Investigators say that alcohol was a factor in the crash, as beer cans were all over the scene of the crash.

It remains under investigation.
