Man charged with murder in 1989 death of teen woman

Washington state teacher settles discrimination suit

Whatcom County prosecutors have filed a charge of first-degree murder against a man in the death of a teenager near Bellingham in 1989.

The Bellingham Herald reports Timothy Bass was charged with murder on Thursday in connection to the abduction, rape and murder of Mandy Stavik of the Acme area.

Whatcom County Prosecutor David McEachran says that’s likely to be the only charge because the statute of limitations has run out for rape or kidnapping charges.

Bass’ arraignment is set for Dec. 22.

Authorities said DNA evidence led to his arrest on Tuesday.

Mandy Stavik vanished in 1989 on the Friday after Thanksgiving while jogging near her home.

A volunteer firefighter found her body during a search three days later in the South Fork of the Nooksack River.
