Man accused of threatening driver on way to help responders

Pierce County prosecutors say a man pulled a gun on another motorist who was on his way to deliver food to first responders helping with Monday’s Amtrak train derailment.

The News Tribune reports that the 52-year-old Rochester man was arraigned Tuesday in Pierce County Superior Court on charges of second-degree assault and making a false statement. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered to surrender his weapons.

Court documents show the victim was driving toward the site of the train wreck near DuPont Monday evening. Prosecutors say that as the victim tried to merge into his lane, the man pointed a handgun at the victim and threatened to kill him.

The victim called 911 and police later stopped the man. They found a knife on him and arrested him.

According to court documents, the man told police he never pulled out a gun though said he pointed his finger at the motorist.
