Major Water Main Break Causes Big Problems In North Pullman

PULLMAN – A large water main break caused major problems for drivers and residents of north Pullman on Thursday night.

The break happened before 5 p.m. on Grand Avenue, just south of Stadium Way. The 12-inch cast iron main was one of the major lines in Pullman, and the force of the break heavily damaged the street. Four large concrete sections of Grand were dislodged by the break.  City crews had to dig a 20 by 30 foot section of Grand to get to the pipe, which had a six-foot long split.

Residents of the Military Hill and College Hill areas were asked to conserve water if they still had service. Many areas of north Pullman lost water service with the break. But most service was restored by 9 p.m. However, residents were still asked to conserve water through Friday morning while the reservoirs that were depleted after the main broke refilled.

Crews from the city of Pullman were working throughout the night to repair the street and the water main. Grand Avenue was closed between Stadium Way and Nye Street, and would be there until around 1 a.m.
