Local Boy Scout Honored For Life-Saving Act

SPOKANE — It was a special day for one local Boyscout who was honored with the “Heroism Award” for saving the life of another young boy.

Chase Fortner, 12, was presented with the award Friday for his heroic act when he rescued a six-year-old boy from drowning in Diamond Lake.

“When I first saw the kid he was scared and he was bobbing up and down and I was like â??oh my god what am I going to do,'” Chase recalled. “So I dove in and he was coughing and sputtering and I immediately handed him to his parents.”

Chase says he learned the life-saving skill from his time at Boy Scout camp.

Secretary of State Sam Reed presented the award Friday morning at the annual Boy Scout Breakfast.
