Latah County Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam

LATAH COUNTY, Idaho — The Latah County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of a phone scam after receiving multiple reports of a caller identifying himself as a deputy who tells the victim there is a warrant for their arrest.
Reports indicate the caller will cancel the arrest warrant by offering to make arrangements for the payment of the “fine.” The caller may then attempt to transfer the victim to another person for “payment,” or demand the victim buy gift cards and provide the card numbers so the monies can be accessed by the caller.
It is believed the caller is using a device to make the call appear that it is coming from local number if the victim has caller ID.
The Latah County Sheriff’s Office will not contact persons to arrange payments to get out of arrest warrants. If you receive a call like this, you’re asked to report it to local law enforcement.
