Washington representative wants to ban weapons from state capitol
OLYMPIA, Wash. – A Washington representative wants to prohibit the possession of weapons at the state capitol.
Representative Tana Senn (D-Mercer Island) said she filed the bill in response to an unpermitted pro-gun rally recently held at the state capitol.
Senn told 4 News Now a group of visiting school children stayed inside the building as more than 200 people openly carried firearms during the rally outside.
Senn noted that children are taught what to do in active shooter situations and the situation was likely confusing. She also mentioned hearing about a student with disabilities whose experience seeing weapons at the statehouse that day caused a major setback.
If passed, the bill would add new language to an existing law that already prohibits weapons from places like public mental health facilities and courthouses.
