Japanese Prime Minister Resigns Unexpectedly
TOKYO — Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has announced his resignation.
Fukuda made the surprise annoucement Monday evening in a hastily called news conference, bringing his term to an end less than a year after he took office.
The 72-year-old has suffered from chronically low support ratings as he presided over a parliament split between the ruling party and the opposition.
He did not specify when the resignation would take effect.
