Israel Launches Improved Spy Satellite

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel has launched an improved spy satellite that’s expected to provide a better look inside Iran, even at night or through cloud cover.

Defense officials say the satellite developed by Israel Aerospace Industries operates with an advanced radar system, allowing it to view much more than existing satellites that use cameras.

The officials say the satellite is of great importance for Israel as it can be used as a tool to follow Iran’s alleged efforts to develop nuclear arms. Iran denies that it is developing nuclear weapons, saying its atomic program is purely for power generation.

Israel considers Iran its greatest enemy and has backed the United States in its efforts to get the international community to intensify sanctions against Tehran. Iran’s president has threatened to annihilate the Jewish state.
