Idaho Parks and Rec. offering free snowmobile-based avalanche courses

Snowmobile safety class offered

The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation is offering free snowmobile-based avalanche awareness classes.

According to the IDPR, roughly 28 people die in avalanches nationally each year. So far this ski season, the US has already seen a total of 12 deaths.

That’s why IDPR is offering the free informational courses.

While snowboard based, department officials say the courses are beneficial to all people enjoying winter sports.

“The classes teach important skills such as how to safely navigate backcountry avalanche terrain, how to make accurate field assessments, and companion rescue training,” said Chelsea Chambers, public information specialist with Idaho State Parks and Recreation.
