SPOKANE, Wash. — Sunday morning, the Gonzaga women’s rowing team won all three races against Portland, Seattle and Pacific Lutheran in its first official race at the Johnson Family Boathouse at Medical Lake, Washington.

With clear conditions and little-to-no wind, the Bulldogs’ varsity 4 and second varsity 4 took control early and led by a full boat length midway through the 2,000-meter course against the Portland Pilots.

In the second varsity 8, the second race of the morning against the Pilots, Gonzaga again took control early, building a sizeable lead with 1,000 meters to go and extending it with 500 remaining. GU finished 25 seconds ahead of Portland.

“First, thank you to the visiting teams for such a great display of pivoting from the plan and working together to make for a great race experience,” Head Coach Andrew Derrick said. “The wind yesterday would have made racing a challenge to say the least. Today however was amazing. The water, conditions, and racing were great! I was really proud of our team for handling several challenging circumstances this week and showing up ready to go. We were sad to not have our full squad racing at home, but those that did, represented all members of our program really well!”

Gonzaga returns to the water Saturday, April 24 at the Oregon State Invitational, hosted by Oregon State on Dexter Lake in Corvallis.
