Girl, 5, wanders from school prompting security changes

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane school officials are considering security changes after a 5-year-old student wandered away from her elementary school and hopped a bus to Spokane Valley.
Spokane Public Schools says the girl left Sheridan Elementary School Friday afternoon and got on a bus. It’s not clear how she was able to leave the campus but district spokesman Kevin Morrison says it’s likely she was on a bathroom break and away from her classroom.
The Spokesman-Review reports that the girl was spotted by a few people who notified the district a short time later.
The bus driver also contacted Spokane Transit Authority dispatch, who notified police. The girl was picked up in Spokane Valley around 2 p.m.
The schools plans changes such as putting up cameras and implementing a buddy system during bathroom breaks.
