Georgia Accuses Russia At World Court
THE HAGUE, Netherlands — With its troops defeated on the battlefield, Georgia is taking its case against Moscow to the U.N.’s highest court.
Georgia is accusing Russia of ethnic cleansing through a campaign of murder, rape and mass expulsion going back to 1990 in two separatist provinces. Russia accuses Georgia of genocide when its forces attacked South Ossetia last week.
Georgia says the fighting started after a series of actions by Moscow and Russian-backed separatists.
It’s asking the court to order Russia to cease all military action and withdraw its forces, to enable hundreds of thousands of displaced ethnic Georgians to return home, and to pay Georgia an unspecified amount in compensation.
