Friday Night Lights in Lewiston

Friday night football returns to Lewiston this week when the Idaho Vandals take their second scrimmage of the spring season to Bengal Field. The scrimmage is at 5:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
“It’s great,” coach Paul Petrino said. “It’s exciting for our players. For a lot of them, it will be like a Friday night high school game under the lights. It’s good to change up the venue.
“We have great supporters down there. It’s good for us to go to them.”
As for the Vandals, Petrino wants to see more precision from every player on every play.
“I continue to want to see guys flying around, playing with great effort,” he said. “We need to clean up our assignments – who’s responsible for what on each play and everybody doing everything exactly right by every last little detail.”
The Vandals have one week of spring football remaining after Friday’s scrimmage. Petrino knows what he wants to see over the next few days.
“It’s important for the guys to continue to battle for their positions,” he said. “They need to keep working hard, keep battling going into summer to see who the starters are.”
Key battles are taking place on both lines where replacements are taking over for graduated offensive linemen Steve Matlock, Mason Woods and Calvin White , and defensive linemen Tueni Lupeamanu and Glen Antoine . Idaho is looking for new tight ends as well with the graduations of Buck Cowan and Deon Watson . The secondary will see newcomers as well. And there will be a new trio handling long snapping, holding and kicking/punting.
Spring football wraps up with the annual Silver and Gold game next Friday at the Kibbie Dome. Kickoff is 6 p.m.
