Forecaster: End Is Near To Mississippi River Rise
LOUISIANA, Mo. (AP) — After weeks of misery in the Midwest, the Mississippi River is finally hitting its high water mark.
The river started cresting Sunday in Missouri and Illinois near the Iowa state line. Federal forecasters expect crests Monday downstream from Hannibal to Clarksville, Missouri.
Folks farther south near Grafton, Illinois, will have to wait a little longer for relief. Forecasters expect the river to crest in Grafton Wednesday.
Some residents in Lincoln County, Missouri, got a reminder of the flood threat Sunday when the water flowed over a levee and flooded about 1,000 acres and a few homes.
Crest levels are coming in far lower than record marks set during a 1993 flood. But the devastation is still widespread. Two-dozen people have been killed and thousands have been forced from flooded homes in six states.
