Feds Searching For CEO In Case Of Tainted Syringes
RALEIGH, N.C. — An international search is on for the owner of a North Carolina plant that shipped tainted syringes, resulting in death and permanent illness.
Investigators say a rush to maximize profits led Dushyant Patel’s AM2PAT Inc. to produce pre-loaded syringes that killed five people and sickened hundreds of others. Some resulted in spinal meningitis and permanent brain damage.
Patel has been indicted on 10 charges including fraud, false statements and selling adulterated medical devices. Authorities believe he fled to his native India.
Court documents portray a disturbing recklessness, including backdated testing. Some test results were manipulated or fabricated to deceive inspectors.
Patel’s company sold nearly $7 million worth of heparin, a blood thinner, and saline syringes in 2006-07.
