Fatal Crash Along Highway 27

FREEMAN, WA — The Washington State Patrol is investigating a fatal head-on crash in south Spokane County that also injured five people.

Troopers say it happened just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, when a car, traveling north along Highway 27, crossed the center line and hit a van coming in the opposite direction.

The highway was blocked for several hours between Elder Road and Chapman Road while crews investigated the scene.

The driver of the car was killed in the crash.

There were five people in the van, including a couple, their daughter and two grandkids. The driver of the van suffered serious injuries and was airlifter to a local hospital, but troopers do not believe the injuries were life threatening.

The other four passengers were also taken to the hospital for treatment.

State troopers do not that believe alcohol was involved in the crash, but they are not sure why the driver of the car crossed the center line.
