EWU football player died by apparent suicide, his high school says

The high school of an Eastern Washington University football player who died earlier this week released a statement on Saturday, saying he died by ‘apparent suicide.’
“The Gridley Unified School community was saddened to learn of the apparent suicide of one of our former students, George Becker,” the statement reads, in part.
Becker, a freshman offensive lineman at EWU, passed away in California over winter break. It was news that rocked the Eastern Washington community.
“Eastern Washington University is saddened to learn of the death of George Becker, a freshman offensive lineman on the football team, over the winter break. The whole Eagle family extends its deepest sympathies and support to the Becker family.”
In an earlier statement, Becker’s high school referred to him as “one of the finest young men to have graced the field.”
