Enjoy local events this MLK Day, make it ‘A Day On, Not a Day Off’

SPOKANE, Wash. — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on Monday, and there are plenty of events to get involved in for folks who want to make it ‘A Day On, Not a Day Off.’

On Sunday, the Martin Luther King Jr. Outreach Center is hosting its annual MLK Commemorative Celebration from 4-6 p.m. at the Holy Temple on 806 W. Indiana Ave.

On Monday, a rally will be held at the Spokane Convention Center at 10 a.m., followed by the Unity March through downtown. There will additionally be a Resource Fair at the Convention Center afterwards from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., also hosted by the Outreach Center.

The City of Spokane is also encouraging people to volunteer at local nonprofits, in the spirit of MLK Day.

Gonzaga University will be hosting a teach-in event – students meet on campus at 9 a.m. to make signs, join the downtown Unity March, then return for a series of lectures and discussions on tolerance, historical voter suppression and civil rights; concluding with a panel with all event speakers.

City Hall, the Municipal Court and all Public Libraries will be closed in observance of MLK Day. City parking meters will also be free for the day.
