East Idaho Man Pleads Not Guilty To 112 Counts Of Assault
POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — A Chubbock man accused of torturing a woman by scarring her daily with a woodburning tool has pleaded not guilty to 112 counts of aggravated battery.
Jose Sanchez, 60, entered his pleas in Sixth District Court Tuesday.
Prosecutors say Sanchez burned the woman almost daily during a four-month period last year, causing burns over 20 percent of her body.
Defense lawyers have challenged the validity of the charges, claiming the woman lacks specific memories of the alleged abuse on 109 of those days. But a magistrate judge denied the challenge, ruling there was substantial evidence to support each count.
Sanchez is being held on a $50,000 bond. His trial is scheduled for May 13.
