Eagle Scout Who Started Fatal Fire Avoids Jail
TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A New Jersey Eagle Scout who killed a 17-year-old fellow Scout while playing with fire will serve no prison time.
Eighteen-year-old Brian Lenz pleaded not guilty Thursday to aggravated assault. He won’t have a criminal record if he performs 100 hours of community service and pays restitution.
Lenz was a senior staff member at a Boy Scout camp in southern New Jersey in July. He was playing a “ring of fire” game that involved igniting rubbing alcohol on a table.
The resulting fire killed Sean Whitley of Evesham (EEV’-sham) and seriously burned two other Scouts.
