Driver steals squad car, runs out of gas during chase

A driver who ran out of gas and called for help is charged with felony grand theft after he stole a deputy’s squad car, law enforcement officials said.

The Associated Press reports Troy James called for assistance early Monday on Highway 281 near Tulare, South Dakota, saying his car had stopped and he had run out of fuel.

Spink County Sheriff Kevin Schurch told the Aberdeen American News the responding deputy attempted to detain James because he was acting bizarrely. Schurch said James pushed the deputy out of his squad car and took off.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol joined in pursuing James who was caught 140 miles away.
