Dr. Seuss Movie Tops Box Office Weekend Receipts

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dr. Seuss is number one at the box office.

The computer-animated movie “Horton Hears a Who!” took in more than $45 million in its debut weekend, according to studio estimates. A distribution executive for 20th Century Fox calls it a “who-mongous” opening.

It’s about an elephant defending a microscopic community from destruction. It features the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell.

Last weekend’s top film – “10,000 B.C.” – slipped to second place, pulling in more than $16 million.

In at number three with nearly $9 million is “Never Back Down,” about a troubled youth who finds purpose in the sport of mixed martial arts fighting.

The weekend’s other new wide release, horror flick “Doomsday,” premiered at number seven.
