Do Your Taxes In Your Pajamas
COEUR D’ALENE — Tax returns and any money you owe Uncle Sam must be postmarked by midnight on April 15th.
Liberty Tax Service just off Highway 95 in Coeur d’Alene stayed open until midnight on Tuesday to help last minute filers with their tax returns. They plan to open at seven tomorrow morning and stay open until midnight again on the 15th.
Few took advantage of the extra late hours on Tuesday, but Liberty employees were inside working on returns people had dropped off. They expect to be slammed on tax day with 50 to 100 people coming in for last minute tax prep.
About one out of every four American’s wait until the last possible week to file their taxes. Most of those are people who owe the government money.
If you haven’t finished, or even started your taxes yet, it’s pretty easy to file for a six month extension, giving you more time to get your paperwork in.
Many don’t know the government still requires you to pay at least 90-percent of what you owe by the April 15th deadline. There are hefty fines for people who don’t pay by the 15th.
Debbie Smith owns Liberty Tax Service in Coeur d’Alene, she says the IRS is expected to be a little nicer this year to people because of the slow economy.
“They’re not as bad, they’re not going to come after you and put a lien on your house,” she said. “They’re willing to work with people for a win-win situation, they want to be paid but they realize the economy is tight and it will take a little longer.”
The majority of tax filings are done over the internet now, causing most post offices to hold regular hours on April 15th. Only one location will stay open late, the Postal Processing Center at 2928 S. Spotted Road.
