Deputies: Driver killed when he crashed car into backyard fence

CHENEY, Wash. — A driver in his 30s was killed Thursday when he crashed a car into someone’s backyard fence.
Spokane County deputies are investigating the crash, which happend in the West Plains on West Sugar Street near Thomas Mallen Road.
When officials arrived, they found the driver dead inside a 2018 Tesla. A passenger, another man in his 30s, was also in the car. Paramedics checked him out, but he declined further treatment.
According to initial information from the Sheriff’s Office, the driver was speeding northbound on Thomas Mallen Road. As the driver approached Hallett Road, deputies said he did not slow down and went through the stop sign.
Authorities said the driver lost control of the Tesla, slid off the road into a vacant lot and crashed into a backyard. The passenger reportedly told deputies he told the driver to slow down several times.
The driver did not own the Tesla, though he did have permission to drive it.
The crash is under investigation.
