Deputies: Central Valley HS student made shooting threat to get out of presentation
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A 16-year-old student admitted to making a school shooting threat at Central Valley High School on Friday, deputies said.
According to a release from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, a note was found in the bathroom as school was starting. Staff and the school resource deputy immediately investigated the threat and quickly identified a suspect.
The student said he came up with the idea because he did not want to give two class presentations during the day.
SCSO deputies said no weapons or any evidence showing he intended to do harm were found during the investigation.
The student was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center for threats to bomb or injure property. The charge is considered a felony.
The Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning that any students who make threats like this will be arrested and booked into jail on felony charges.
“This is NOT funny nor a way to get a day off from school or to show you can’t be dared. It is a CRIME, and you will be arrested,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a release.
The alleged threat came just hours after East Valley High School canceled class for a similar threat. Earlier this month, a 13-year-old girl was arrested for reportedly making a threat on social media as part of a dare.
The Sheriff’s Office has urged families to talk to their students about the gravity of threats and the repercussions that come as a result.
