Delta To Offer Voluntary Severance Payouts To 30,000 Workers
ATLANTA (AP) — Delta Air Lines says it plans to offer voluntary severance payouts to roughly 30,000 employees, or more than half its work force. The Atlanta-based carrier wants to trim its domestic capacity by an extra 5 percent this year as part of an overhaul of its business plan to deal with soaring fuel prices.
In a memo to workers, executives say the airline’s goal is to cut 2,000 frontline, administrative and management jobs through the voluntary program, attrition and other initiatives.
A spokeswoman says that if more workers than that agree to take severance, that will be allowed.
Oil prices recently topped $111 a barrel, well above year-ago levels.
