‘Dead’ Canoeist Pleads Guilty To Fraud
LONDON (AP) — A British man accused of faking his death in an insurance scam is pleading guilty to fraud.
John Darwin admits obtaining money by deception and obtaining a false passport.
The 57-year-old made headlines last year when he appeared at a London police station claiming to have amnesia. He had been declared dead after disappearing while canoeing in 2002.
Police accused Darwin and his wife of staging the death to collect his $50,000 insurance policy. Pictures that appeared in British newspapers seemed to show the couple together in Panama, four years after Darwin’s purported death.
His wife has denied involvement, and faces trial later this year.
