Crews still searching for missing skier in Silver Mountain avalanche
Crews at Silver Mountain continued to search for a skier who was reported missing on Wednesday.
At a press conference, the Shoshone County Sheriff said approximately 60 people joined the search Wednesday.
Three to four avalanche dogs also joined search efforts, as well as crews from Shoshone and Kootenai County and other area resorts.
The Sheriff said search efforts will continue into the evening and, if unsuccessful, crews will pick back up again Thursday morning.
Tuesday’s avalanche happened on Wardner Peak, in the Chair Four basin on a run called 16-to-1, according to the Silver Mountain Resort.
Search crews and volunteers found five skiers alive in the debris. They were all rescued with minor injuries. Initially, only one person was found dead. That person’s body was recovered from the mountain.
Crews continued searching throughout the day Tuesday. Around 9:00 p.m., it was announced another skier had been found buried in debris. That person was taken to Shoshone Medical Center. Mountain staff later confirmed on Facebook that a second skier had died.
