Crash near State Line sends WSP trooper to the hospital

A Washington State Patrol Trooper was hosptialized Saturday after his patrol car was hit on the side of the highway.

According to a release from Washington State Patrol, 42-year-old Trooper James Wickham was taken to Valley Medical Center just after 4:30 Saturday.

The trooper was parked on the right shoulder of I-90, near State Line, checking out a disabled vehicle when driver of a car that was traveling on I-90 fell asleep, hit the rear of another car on the highway, then veered onto the shoulder and hit the trooper’s patrol car. A release from WSP identifies the driver as 19-year-old Allen Wells, from Spokane.

Wells was injured and treated at the scene. He was cited for negligent driving in the 2nd degree. WSP said there were no signs that he was impaired.

The driver of the car that was rear-ended on the highway was not hurt. WSP Trooper Jeff Sevigney reported Saturday night that the trooper was not seriously injured. His patrol car was totalled.
