Competency evaluation ordered for South Hill shooting suspect
SPOKANE, Wash. — Lawyers for the woman accused of a shooting rampage on the lower South Hill want to know if she is competent to stand trial.
Tuesday, Judge James Triplet approved a competency evaluation requested by Anne Marie Carpenter’s lawyer.
Carpenter appeared only briefly in court for the approval of that evaluation. She sat still and silent during her appearance. No reason was provided for requesting the evaluation.
Carpenter, 27, is charged with the murder of Danette Kane and wounding Michael Troy during a shooting on December 19, 2017 at the Westview Manor Apartments.
According to court documents, there was some sort of dispute between Carpenter’s father who lives at the apartment complex and the manager Micheal Troy, which investigators believe could be motive for the shooting.
Court documents allege Carpenter went to the complex looking for Troy and when she found him in the parking lot, shot him three times. Investigators say when Carpenter was leaving, she saw Kane on the third story landing. Court documents show Carpenter climbed the stairs and allegedly shot Kane at a short distance.
Carpenter was arrested after three days on the run. Police say tips from the public were essential in catching Carpenter.
A hearing for the results of her competency hearing has been scheduled for February 16 at 8:30 a.m.
