City releases renderings for Riverfront Park’s new ‘destination playground’

SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane has released the renderings for Riverfront Park’s soon-to-be destination playground.

The North Bank playground will be Ice Age Floods themed, the City said, after the historic floods that sculpted the geology in our region.

It will be situated between Howard and Washington Street, along the Spokane River.

As part of the project, the City is also adding a wheels park and basketball court.

The location of the wheels park was decided based on a study conducted by Grindline, to replace Spokane’s previous UTF park.

According to the city, both Grindline and Bernardo Wills architects gathered information from the skating community when deciding the park’s design.

The Hooptown USA basketball court will be 10,000 square feet and will feature 6 basketball hoops.

“The goal of the playground is to create an exciting, safe, dynamic, high quality nature-based play/learn environment for children and their families,” it reads on the City of Spokane’s website.

Spokane Parks and Recreation recently received a $500,000 grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office to fund the project, which will cost a total of $9.9 million.

It is expected to be ready by spring next year.
