China Tainted Milk Scandal Widens
CBEIJING — China’s tainted milk scandal is growing.
New tests performed by the nation’s quality watchdog have found melamine in liquid milk produced by three of the country’s leading dairy companies.
Melamine is a toxic industrial chemical that can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure.
Tainted baby formula has been blamed for killing four infants in China and making 6,200 children sick. Some 1,300 babies — mostly newborns — are in hospitals, and thousands of parents across the country are taking their children to hospitals for health checks.
Singapore has suspended the sale and import of all Chinese milk and Hong Kong’s two biggest grocery chains have pulled all products made by China’s two largest dairies from their shelves.
