China Promises Safe Food For Visitors To Summer Games
BEIJING (AP) — China reports it is making progress against tainted food and hazardous toys.
A government official says all food for this summer’s Beijing Olympics will be carefully checked and supplied only by approved providers. Hundreds of thousands of hungry visitors are expected to attend the mid-August games.
Recent food scares in China have involved fake milk powder that led to the deaths of at least a dozen babies and a cancer-causing industrial dye that was used to color egg yolks.
Beijing’s vice minister of quality supervision says 600 makers of hazardous toys have lost their licenses since last August in a product safety campaign. The effort is considered part public relations and part crackdown. But the official insists,”Product quality and food safety are global issues.”
