China: 37 Die As Bus Tumbles Into Gorge, Another Collides With Trucks
BEIJING — Two bus crashes have killed 37 people in China.
In one accident, the official Xinhua News Agency reports a rescue effort is under way after a bus went off a highway near Nanping city, tumbling into a mountain gorge. Seventeen people were killed and eight others injured.
Meanwhile, police in Jiangxi province says 20 people were killed and 11 injured when a minibus crashed through a highway barrier and collided head on with two trucks on the other side of the expressway.
Road accidents happen frequently in China, where overloaded and unsafe vehicles, poor road conditions and bad driving habits are common. Just last week, 19 people were killed when a bus hit a parked truck on a busy highway in northeast China.
