Charity bike ride raises $36K to support Kootenai Co. first responders
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — The North Idaho community helped raise more than $36,000 dollars that will benefit Kootenai County first responders and their families during hard times.
The Kootenai County Police and Memorial Foundation was started in 2005 to serve those who protect others. The foundation provides grants to Kootenai Co. first responders and their families when they face unforseen catastrophic circumstances, including death, ilness, and injury.
Each year, the foundation hosts a charity bike ride. This year’s event in March raised $36,500.
The foundation was born out of tragedy 13 years ago after a CDA police officer was seriously injured on the job. Several retired law enforcement officers like Addison Arce, who worked as a police officer in Los Angeles before retiring in Idaho, had seen the benefits of such a foundation in their places of work, and thought Kootenai County could use something like it.
“We then went out in the community and got people who really had a passion for assisting the first responders in Kootenai County. After 13 years we’ve given out 30 awards totaling about $80,000,” explained Arce.
