Central Washington Fires Continue To Grow

TONASKET, Wash. — High winds have forced firefighters off the fire line on Cayuse Mountain as wind gust reached 60-mph late Thursday.

High winds this afternoon forced firefighters to pull back from some areas of the fire for safety.

The fire is estimated to be about 1400 acres, though firefighters will be able to get a better estimate once the winds settle. There has been one structure lost 11 homes are still threatened.

Firefighting resources assigned to Cayuse included equipment and about 150 firefighters. There was air support in the form of retardant drops and three helicopters provided support.

The so-called Cayuse fire started Wednesday afternoon but officials don’t know what caused it.

There’s no estimate on when it might be contained.
