Cayuse Mountain Fire Quickly Burns 500 Acres
TONASKET, Wash. — A fire near Tonasket in Okanogan County has quickly grown to 500 acres and is threatening two homes.
The fire on Cayuse Mountain was first reported just after 3 p.m. Wednesday. It started on private land and has spread fast, threatening to go onto federal and state lands.
Guy Gifford from the state Department of Natural Resources says that retardant planes from Moses Lake and British Columbia are at the scene, and two rotor crews are also at the fire. He says that it is still burning out of control.
Two homes have been evacuated by Okanogan County deputies, and residents of six more homes are on alert to be ready in case the fire keeps spreading.
DNR is sending a Type III response team to the scene.
