Canadians shutout Indians to take series
SPOKANE, Wash. — The bats just couldn’t get it going Sunday night as the Spokane Indians fell to the Vancouver Canadians 6-0 in the series finale for Hawaiian & Harley Day with Pre-Game Ride the Bases presented by Lone Wolf Harley-Davidson, KHQ, 98.9 KKZX, and The Spokesman-Review.
TOP PERFORMERS
Werner Leal provided some much needed relief from the bullpen in the fourth inning. He inherited the bases loaded with just one out, and managed to only surrender one additional run. Leal threw 1.2 innings with no earned runs and a K. The outing moved his ERA to a jaw-dropping 0.71, and he’s struck out 34 batters while only issuing six walks.
Derwin Barreto was just added to the roster on Saturday but has already earned four walks in eight plate appearances. He received three free passes tonight and got into scoring position two of the three times.
You have to tip your cap to Vancouver’s pitching staff. Starter Adam Kloffenstein and reliever Luis Quinones combined for eight scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts and just two hits. Gage Burland , a local product out of East Valley High School and Lewis-Clark State College, picked up a strikeout in his 9 th inning appearance. It was his first outing in three weeks.
BY THE NUMBERS
Spokane only had eight baserunners all night, with just two hits along with six walks. The Indians finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
It’s the third time Spokane has been shutout this season, and it’s the second time it’s been at the hands of Vancouver. The previous scoreless outing was a 4-0 defeat at Nat Bailey Stadium on June 29 th .
Sunday’s loss gives the series win to the Canadians. The Indians had won their previous five series and six of their last seven.
AROUND THE NWL NORTH DIVISION
After posting 11 runs last night, the Tri-City Dust Devils matched a season-high with 12 runs against the Everett AquaSox on the way to a 12-9 victory. Six games into the second half of the season, the entire North Division is 3-3 and coincidentally all of the South Division is also 3-3.
NEXT GAME AT AVISTA STADIUM
The Indians are now away from Avista Stadium for 10 days, their longest stretch of the season. Spokane travels to Eugene for four games with the Emeralds, followed by three games with the Everett AquaSox. The seven-game road trip leads into the NWL All-Star Break starting on Monday, August 5 th and ending Wednesday, August 7 th . The Indians will finally return home on Thursday, August 8 th for a stretch of 16 home games over the next 23 days.
